If you are making cupcakes, you must need frosting. Not only for cupcakes, there is no great cake without them. Frosting can be of three types and one of the most popular one is buttercream frosting. Do not get scared thinking you are going to have frosting and choose the ones available in cans in store. The frosting that comes in cans are not as tasty as the ones you make. It is quiet easy to make and all you need are few ingredients. As the name says, “butter” is the key ingredient. There are many ways to apply frosting on the cupcake. It depends on your piping. Here is how you can make vanilla buttercream frosting.

Here is what you will need:

One-third cup of butter

2 tablespoons of milk

2 tablespoons of vanilla extract

25 ounces of powdered sugar

Equipment – mixing bowl and electric mixer (or a wire whisk)

Silicon spatula

Here is what you need to do:

Step 1: Let the solid butter sit and turn soft. Later on put in in the mixing bowl and turn on the electric mixer at a less velocity. Add the powdered sugar, since it is a big amount, add slowly and gently and make sure there is not mess. Pour the milk and the pure vanilla extract and keep on combining till everything is properly mixed.

Step 2: Since the mixture is going to get onto the sides of the bowl, scrape it down using a silicon spatula. Do every time, the mixture is trying to leave the bowl. If the mixture is to thick or lacks moisture, add milk. Silicon spatula comes in many sizes, use the one that you need.

Step 3: Continue mixing and stirring the frosting until it becomes hundred percent rich and creamy. Now it is time to add colors. You can get orange, red, blue, violet, green, yellow and many other colors. Do not add more than two or three drops because they have a high density.

· If it is frosting, you require has to be white in color then skip the coloring part. If it is not for cupcakes, but for a regular cake, then white frosting can be perfect for a wedding cake. You can even separate the mixture in different bowls and add the colors. For example, in one bowl you can add green for green color frosting on the cake and on one bowl add the yellow. Different colors can make the cupcakes look pretty.

· You must really careful that the butter is not cold or hard, it needs to be at room temperature and the texture should be soft. You can substitute powdered sugar with icing sugar or confectioner’s sugar.

· If it is for cupcakes, you are going to have to pipe it and put in on the surface of the cupcakes. Add a teaspoon of milk to lower the thickness, or more milk until you get your desired consistency. If it for a regular cake, like square or a circle one, then do not add too much milk.
